Chanderi silk sarees trace their origins to the ancient town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, with references dating back to the Vedic period and mentions in the 7th century by Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang. The weaving tradition flourished under the patronage of Mughal rulers, who admired its fine texture and delicate motifs, and later saw a revival in the early 20th century thanks to the Scindia royal family1. Initially crafted by Muslim weavers and later enriched by Koshti artisans from Jhansi, Chanderi sarees evolved from cotton muslin to silk blends, incorporating gold thread motifs and Japanese silk to enhance their elegance. Today, they stand as a symbol of India’s rich textile heritage, celebrated for their lightweight feel, intricate designs, and timeless appeal.
